United Airlines has announced significant changes to its rewards credit cards and annual lounge passes, a move designed to reflect a shift in travel habits among frequent flyers. The update revises the annual fees and adjusts benefits for travelers who enjoy premium travel perks, creating new options for those who seek added convenience during their trips.

The new fee structure was revealed on Monday during a press briefing. Working with a major banking partner, the carrier introduced refreshed sign-up incentives along with added perks such as rideshare credits and discounts on award flights. Richard Nunn, the executive responsible for the MileagePlus loyalty program, stated that the changes were carefully planned to balance higher fees with enhanced benefits. The modifications have been in the works for several months as the airline responded to evolving customer preferences.

Air services have shifted toward charging extra for benefits once offered at no cost. Prices for amenities like checked bags and priority seating have steadily risen. The updated fee schedule comes at a time when more travelers are joining premium tiers, which has put pressure on available space in airport lounges. United has updated access policies in its business class and other premium services, while other carriers have expanded their lounge facilities to better serve high-spending passengers.

The MileagePlus program has seen an increase of nearly 17 million members in recent years. This growth has prompted United to refine its rewards offerings to attract more loyal customers to its credit card portfolio. The added perks not only improve the travel experience but also contribute to strong financial performance. Last fiscal year, United earned about $3.49 billion from alternative revenue streams—a 10 percent increase from the previous year. This income largely comes from increased spending on co-branded cards, partnerships with external companies, and higher fees for lounge memberships.

Lounge membership offerings have been restructured into two options. The first option is an individual pass priced at about $750 per year or 94,000 loyalty points, granting access solely to the holder. The second option allows the member to bring two guests and carries a fee of $1,400 per year, or 175,000 miles. Previously, memberships with guest access cost around $650 annually, with discounts available for elite flyers. Current members will retain their original terms until their memberships expire.

Fee adjustments for rewards credit cards have been made across different tiers. New applicants will face the updated fees, while current cardholders keep their existing benefits. The entry-level card now costs $150 per year, up from $95, and includes a $60 rideshare credit. A mid-level card has risen from $250 to $350, offering a $100 rideshare credit, two extra legroom upgrades, and $200 in travel credits. The premium card now costs $695 instead of $525, and comes with a lounge membership, a $150 rideshare credit, and bonus points toward the highest loyalty status.

United’s revised fee strategy mirrors shifts in traveler demand and aims to maintain a competitive level of service quality. The updated programs are expected to appeal to passengers who value additional convenience and contribute positively to the airline’s financial performance.
