Overview of the Incident
Early Tuesday in India's Kashmir region, a violent attack in the Baisaran Valley left 26 people dead. Witnesses described how the attackers separated the male members of the gathered crowd from the women and children before questioning them about their identities and then executing them at extremely close range. Armed with multiple firearms, the assailants roamed the area and discharged roughly 60 rounds of ammunition in varied locations within the valley. Survivors and local security personnel have since recounted these distressing moments during interviews, painting a grim picture of the afternoon.
Baisaran is known for its peaceful hilltop meadows surrounded by thick pine woodlands and is often celebrated for its natural beauty. At the time of the incident, nearly 1,000 tourists and around 300 local service providers had gathered in the valley. What many had anticipated as a pleasant retreat quickly turned into a scene of chaos and terror. The attack, which marks the most violent incident in India in nearly 20 years, saw three gunmen methodically moving through the open field, targeting select individuals and leaving deep sorrow in their wake.
Eyewitness Accounts and Personal Stories
Among the survivors, Asavari Jagdale from Maharashtra shared an account that captured the horror of those moments. Her family was among those caught in the attack, and she lost both her father and her uncle that day. According to her recollection, as Asavari and other tourists took cover in a nearby tent, the militants approached and called for her father, Santosh Jagdale, to recite an Islamic verse. When he could not comply, the attackers fired three bullets—striking him on the head, behind his ear, and in his back. Shortly afterward, her uncle, who had been standing nearby, was subjected to multiple gunshots. These tragic moments have left an indelible mark on the community and on those who witnessed the unfolding events.
Another firsthand account came from Debasish Bhattacharyya, a lecturer at Assam University with roots in a predominantly Muslim neighborhood. Familiar with Islamic recitations, he detailed how the militants forced him and others to kneel on the ground. As nearby voices began reciting verses, Bhattacharyya followed the lead, seeking to protect himself. He observed that those who did not participate were met with fatal consequences. After the attackers eventually departed, Bhattacharyya and a small group of survivors managed to escape, trekking through surrounding wooded areas for nearly two hours until they reached safety. This courageous choice likely saved his life on that fateful day.
Tourists, Locals, and Community Response
Reports indicate that the attackers moved through the valley dressed in traditional attire—long shirts with loose trousers—with one individual even seen wearing a camera attached to his body. The militants opened fire at three separate points along the valley, with some victims targeted at local food outlets while others were lured into more secluded wooded sections before being shot. Baisaran, situated roughly 4 km from the Pahalgam area, is reached by foot or on horseback and has long been a favored spot for those seeking outdoor excitement, including activities such as ziplining and zorbing. In addition, the area serves as a starting point for trekkers setting off to reach an alpine lake located about 11 km away.
Among the victims was Prashant Satpathy from Odisha, who was on the last day of a four-day trip with his wife, Priyadarshini, and their young son. The family had just enjoyed a zipline experience when Satpathy was struck by a bullet on his head. His wife recalled the moment in clear detail, describing how he collapsed instantly in front of her eyes. In another heartbreaking instance, Adil Hussain Shah, known for operating pony rides in Pahalgam, was also killed during the attack. A senior regional official who met Shah’s family described him as a brave individual who attempted to counter the attack and possibly tried to take control of one of the firearms, an action that may have singled him out for targeting.
Local security forces have launched a concerted review of the event, gathering information from survivors and community members. Families affected by the tragedy are receiving support as authorities work to document a clearer chronology of the attack. Residents remain in shock and sorrow, coping with the sudden loss of life and the shattering of a normally calm and popular area.
Community leaders hope that a thorough investigation will piece together all aspects of the distressing events. Families who lost their loved ones are calling on government officials for increased vigilance and assistance as the region’s inhabitants begin to cope with the lasting effects of this violent incident.
