Scientists have warned of a potential wave nearing 1,000 feet in height that may flood large areas of the United States if a powerful earthquake strikes along an active fault in the next 50 years. Experts indicate that parts of the West Coast, including Alaska and Hawaii, could suffer severe damage.

The concern focuses on the Cascadia subduction zone, a fault line extending from northern Vancouver Island to California’s Cape Mendocino. A new analysis estimates about a 15 percent chance of an 8.0 magnitude quake striking within the next five decades. Such an event might wash away cities like Seattle and Portland and lower coastal land by over six feet, resulting in a colossal tsunami with waves reaching nearly 1,000 feet.

Under normal conditions, tsunamis form modest waves; in this case, the event would produce a surge of dramatic scale. The quake’s impact would strike rapidly, leaving little opportunity for swift emergency response. Research indicates that the measure of coastal flood expansion remains uncharted, suggesting recovery may turn out lengthy and expensive.

Lead researcher Tina Dura, an assistant professor at Virginia Tech in Geosciences, remarked that an increase in flood-prone areas following an earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone could extend the period for restoration. The worst effects are expected in southern Washington, northern Oregon, and northern California. Locations such as Alaska and Hawaii remain vulnerable due to their seismic and volcanic activity.

The analysis highlights the need for coastal communities to prepare for a situation with little warning. Emergency groups may need to adopt new strategies in planning and response. As coastal flood areas expand, the consequences of such an event could challenge the speed of recovery. The findings prompt a reevaluation of current preparedness measures to reduce risks from a sudden earthquake and subsequent wave.
