During a recent phone conversation with Putin, Trump asserted that the conflict in Ukraine should be brought to a prompt halt. His remarks came on the heels of the first face-to-face meeting since 2022 between representatives from Ukraine and Russia held in Turkey. Although discussions following that meeting suggested that ceasefire negotiations would begin immediately, Russian officials confirmed that no further direct talks had been scheduled. Trump’s remonstrations follow his repeated promises during his campaign to return to the White House—a time when he vowed to conclude the ongoing hostilities quickly.
Meanwhile, new economic measures have been imposed by the European Union this month in reaction to Putin’s refusal to consider an immediate ceasefire. Trump has threatened further economic actions, including stepped-up tariffs, though such measures have not yet materialized.
